観光地理のエクスカーション
1. エクスカーション（野外実習）
観光地理の教室では、エクスカーションを実施しています。エクスカーションは、野外実習と呼ばれたり、フィールドワークとも呼ばれます。エクスカーションは、観光の基本です。
エクスカーションの参加者は、教室の外で学びます。インストラクター（私）は、実際の物を見せながら説明をします。
エクスカーションに参加すると、いったい何が得なのでしょうか。私の経験では、外の風にあたりながら聞いたことは、頭の深いところに記憶されて、忘れないことだと思います（立ちながら聞いていたこともあると思います。）。
2. 観光地理
今の日本において、観光は成長をつづけている産業です。どうして観光は、成長をつづけているのでしょうか。ひとつの答えは、外国人の観光客が増えているためです。
そのような状況に対応するために、観光地理の教室では、日本の地理を英語で紹介する授業を行っています。
地理は観光の基本です。地理には、その土地の地形、気候、植生、文化、人口、産業などが含まれます。他の似たような分野と違うのは、観光地理では、人と自然とのつながりを重視することです。
観光地理を学ぶと、いったい何が得なのでしょうか。私の経験では観光地理を学ぶことは、人生の楽しみだと思います。私たち観光地理の教室では、若い学生も、年配の学生も、外国人も学んできました。
3. エクスカーションの例
観光地理の教室では、いくつかのエクスカーションを実施しています。東京都立大学のキャンパスの近くでは、徒歩でエクスカーションを実施しています。以下は、エクスカーションで説明するためのメモの一部です。
東京都立大学のキャンパスは、多摩丘陵の上にあります。標高は約120メートルです。
多摩丘陵は、東京の西郊に位置しています。多摩丘陵のなかでも、このキャンパスがある地区は、多摩ニュータウンとして開発されました。
丘陵地には、都営の住宅団地が分布しています。歩行者専用道路や緑地も分布しています。それらを地図上でみますと、まるで蜘蛛の巣のようです。
丘陵地では、タヌキ、アナグマ、ムササビ、フクロウ、コウモリ、キツツキなどの野生動物をみかけます。それらは私たちに、昔の森を思い起こさせます。
谷間では、かつて集落と水田がひろがっていました。その地形は、「谷戸（やと）」と呼ばれていました。

高校生へ向けてのメッセージ
観光地理について、観光は新しい学問で、地理は古い学問です哲学や数学などと同じように、2千年以上の歴史があります。
地理（geography）は、地球（geo）を記述する（graph）ことです。今は忙しい世の中です。地球を記述することで、何の得があるのでしょう？私の経験では、自分の頭で物事を考えられるようになります。いろいろな角度から物事を考えるということです。
Excursion of Tourism Geography
1. Excursion (Yagai-jisshuu)
The Laboratory of Tourism Geography offers excursions.
``Excursion'' is called ``field work'' or ``yagai-jisshuu'' in Japanese. Excursions are the basis of tourism.
During excursions, students learn outside the classroom. The instructor explains by showing real things.
What is the benefit of participating in excursions? Outside, words enter your brain with the wind and remain for a long time. (One reason is that you are standing.)
2. Tourism Geography
Today, tourism is a thriving industry in this country.
Why is tourism thriving? A simple answer is that many foreign tourists visit the country.
To keep up with the circumstances, the Laboratory of Tourism Geography provides instructions on how to explain Japanese geography in English.
Geography is the basis of tourism. Geography includes topography, climate, vegetation, culture, population, and industries.
Compared to other similar studies, tourism geography emphasizes the relationship between humans and the natural environment.
What is the benefit of learning tourism geography? The instructor thinks it is a joy of life. Young students, elderly students, and international students have studied in our laboratory.
3. Case of Excursion
The Laboratory of Tourism Geography offers excursions. Near the campus of Tokyo Metropolitan University, we offer walking excursions.
The following is part of the excursion notes that the instructor wrote.
The campus of Tokyo Metropolitan University is located on the Tama Hills. The elevation is about 120 meters.
The Tama Hills is located in the western suburb of Tokyo. The area where this campus is located was developed as Tama New Town.
On the hills, public apartments are distributed. Pedestrian streets and green spaces spread out. Those look like spider webs on the map.
The hills are inhabited by raccoon dogs, badgers, flying squirrels, owls, bats, and woodpeckers. They remind us of old forests.
Along the valleys, in the past, villages and paddy fields were distributed. The topography was called `Yato' in Japanese.

Message From Laboratory
Tourism is a new discipline. Geography is an old discipline. It is as old as philosophy and mathematics, which have a history of two thousand years or more.
Geography is the record (graph) of the Earth (geo).
Today, we live in a busy society. What is the benefit of recording the Earth?
The instructor thinks that it allows us to think with our brains.
This means that we can think about a thing from various angles.
