Happy New Year!

As globalization advances, social structures are rapidly changing both domestically and internationally. Innovations in cutting-edge fields driven by AI and next-generation technologies are opening new possibilities for academic research. At the same time, amid growing geopolitical risks and increasing uncertainty about the future of our global environment, universities are expected to strengthen their international research capabilities and contribute to solving societal challenges.

In this context, our university, as the only comprehensive university established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, bears the mission of nurturing vibrant young people and contributing to the future of society and the planet. Last year, we made progress through initiatives such as the “Tokyo Center For Excellence Project” to recruit outstanding young researchers and the “Miyako-MIRAI Project” to enhance support for doctoral students, all aimed at improving research capabilities and supporting the future of young scholars. Building on these achievements, in 2026 we will position further strengthening of research capacity as a key priority and ensure that these advancements are steadily reflected in education.

This year will also mark significant progress in our efforts toward internationalization. We are preparing to introduce English-taught programs in multiple departments starting in the 2027 academic year and to establish a new international faculty in the 2028 academic year. Our goal is to create a campus that attracts diverse young people from around the world and to achieve high international competitiveness. Furthermore, by accurately identifying the needs of society and industry and reflecting them in our research and education, we aim to respond to the demands of the times and make a strong contribution to social development.

To the students studying at our university, we hope you will embrace learning with a global perspective and take on various challenges during your time here. To our researchers, we ask for your understanding of our university’s commitment to progress and for your support and collaboration as partners in creating the future. We will strengthen partnerships with research institutions and companies both in Japan and abroad, promoting international joint research and innovative research projects.

Tokyo Metropolitan University will continue to vigorously advance research, education, and community engagement under the philosophy of “Shaping the Future of the World from Tokyo.” May 2026 be a year full of hope for all of you.
