History

Our University was founded in April 2005 under the name “Tokyo Metropolitan University (首都大学東京) ” by reorganizing and combining four metropolitan universities: Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology, Tokyo Metropolitan University of Health Sciences, and Tokyo Metropolitan College. The name was then changed to “Tokyo Metropolitan University” in April 2020.

Hiroshi TAKAHASHI appointed inaugural Chairperson and Junichi NISHIZAWA inaugural President
2006 Division of Industrial Art established in Faculty of Systems
Design Graduate Schools reorganized and Graduate School of Humanities, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Urban Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Systems Design, and Graduate School of Human Health Sciences founded
2008 Division of Nature- and Culture-based Tourism established in Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences
2008 Urban Science Coordination Center launched to work solely with administrative organizations
Acceptance of international students and implementation of advanced research through the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Asian Human Resources Fund
2009 Fumio HARASHIMA appointed President
Division of Economics established in the School of Business Administration, Faculty of Urban Liberal Arts
The university created its own scholarship programs for students enrolling in doctoral courses in graduate schools
Postgraduate bodies reorganized and renamed as departments
2010 Industrial Art Department established in Graduate School of Systems Design
2015 Jun UENO appointed President
2018 The four schools in the Faculty of Urban Liberal Arts (School of Law, School of Business Administration, School of Science, and School of Humanities and Social Sciences) reorganized and four new faculties founded: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, and Faculty of Science
Graduate schools correspondingly restructured to create 23 departments in 7 faculties and 28 departments in 7 graduate schools
2020 The university renamed to Tokyo Metropolitan University
2021 Takaya OHASHI appointed President

1972 The above two colleges integrated and Metropolitan College of Technology, Tokyo opened
1986 Transitioned to 4-year degrees, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology established (4 Departments in 1 Faculty: Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Department of Electronic Systems Engineering, Department of Aerospace Engineering, and Department of Management Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering)
1990 Master’s programs founded (Department of Dynamic Systems Engineering and Department of Electronics and Information Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering)
