Department of Frontier Health Sciences

Various issues in the Frontier Health Sciences are approached from the level of the atom, molecular, cell, organ, system, whole body and human community, using interdisciplinary and cutting-edge basic scientific research strategies in the life sciences, basic, clinical, and social medicine.

This department is comprised of four programs: (1) the Brain Function Assessment Science Program, which researches brain function imaging related to important themes for humans and society, such as sympathy and love; (2) the Muscle Science Program, which conducts research related to the contractile device structure and functions of muscle cells that have maintained their structure; (3) the Functional Morphology Program, which researches mechanisms of acute and chronic visceral pain, also investigates differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells in visceral fat tissue to elucidate underlying mechanisms of obesity in newly developed experimental animal “Suncus murinus;” and (4) the Community Health Activities Evaluation Program, which researches health and care phenomena through epidemiological approaches and health statistics. To promote education and research, this department cultivates advanced researchers and educators in interdisciplinary and cutting-edge basic scientific research fields, as well as practically trained specialists with a wide range of knowledge and advanced research skills. It does this by flexibly promoting organic ties with other departments, and using the state-of-the-art comprehensive research bases at partner graduate schools such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science and the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology.
